The Paris Shadows marks a turning point in The Detective Nathaniel Grey Mysteries. The cases have been moving outward — from country estates to industrial towns to the capital — and now beyond England entirely.

Paris in 1931 is a city between worlds: the Jazz Age fading, the Depression arriving, and something darker gathering at the edges of Europe. Grey feels it without being able to name it.
